Raw food diet controversy

Listen to internet radio with Roger Welton DVM on Blog Talk Radio
Airs Wed February 29, 2012, 9PM EST. Listen to this podcast directly from my show page by CLICKING HERE.

Dear Listeners, Viewers, and Readers:

Tonight I will be tackling the ever so controversial raw diet movement.  I will present you with the history of who started this movement, what the theory behind it was, whether or not it is as effective as its proponents say it is, whether or not it is as dangerous as its opponents say it is.

This is one of the most polarizing topics in the animal care industry, so I am looking foreward to listener feedback.  As always, I invite you to post comments right here at the blog or submit e-mail comments/questions to be addressed by me on the air, by sending them to comments@web-dvm.net.

Thank you as always for caring about what I have to say!
Sincerely,

Roger Welton, DVM

Dr. Roger Welton is the President and chief veterinarian at Maybeck Animal Hospital in West Melbourne Florida, as well as CEO of the veterinary advice and health management website Web-DVM.net.

I was very curious how you were going to present this Dr., as most vets have just outright disdain for raw diet. I have often felt very judged and looked down upon by vets as some kind of wierdo because of the diet I choose for my dogs.

I thought you presented this very fairly and honestly based on your observations as a vet and how you understand canine physiology. While you did not outwardly endorse raw feeding, you certainly approached the topic with respect and conceded your own observations of success stories in the face of only a few cases where things went badly when feeding raw.

I also love that you offered guidelines to follow for those who are intent on feeding raw and a website to do it safely and in a well balanced manner.

I must say, I was not expecting much given the vet industry's general attitude toward raw feeding, but you really showed me an enlightened and respectful side of veterinary medicine that was refreshing. Thank you.

Sorry, I'm with the vets on this one. I was cuttting up raw chicken for dinner one night, and when I walked out of the kitchen, my dog snuck up to the counter and helped himself to about a 1/4 pound of raw meat. Later that night, he became violently ill and had to go to the vet the next morning, then remain in the hospital with an IV for 3 days. I cannot see the wisdom in PURPOSELY feeding my dog raw meat in light of that experience.

I do like raw diet because in reality, it is no more dangerous for dogs than us eating sushi. And sushi is as good for us as raw is for dogs - look at the japanese who live on rice, seaweed, and raw fish: they have much longer life expectancies than Americans that eat so much over-processed, chemical laden garbage. I have seen the same positive results in my dogs having fed them raw for the past 15 years. I am glad the doc pointed out that there is a right way to do it, that the diet needs to be balanced, and that people do their dogs a disservice by feedng raw without properly understanding how to keep it safe and maintaining a good overall balance of nutrition. Very nice, fair take on raw, Dr. Roger. Very refreshing to hear this from a veterinarian.

Eating raw food involves a lot of confidence and practice, especially if you’re not a vegan or vegetarian. We all know that a fruit based diet can really help, but the occasional cooking will also do once in a while.

You really make it appear really easy together with your presentation but
I to find this matter to be really something that I think I'd never understand. It seems too complicated and extremely extensive for me. I am looking forward for your subsequent post, I will attempt to get the hang of it!
